Is it rude to shut down you cell phone when you're on vacation?

I'm thinking of shutting it down coz I know my boss might call me and ask me about work related things when I'm gone. When I told him I'm going on vacation next week, he told me he'll call me and might send me emails if he needed anything.

I just wanna take a few quiet days out of work.

So, should I keep it open and not answer him or should I shut it down for everybody?

  1. I don't think it's rude, and besides, you're on vacation. My cellphone is turned off almost all day :D

  2. It's not rude. When you're on vacation, it's YOUR time off and you can do what you want. You can choose to turn off your cell or screen whoever is calling. Most cell phones have caller ID available. If you see the boss's phone number, don't answer and let it go to voice-mail. Your best options are to just turn it off or, leave it at home.

  3. Not rude at all.

If it's really that important, he can leave a message and you can choose whether or not to return the call.

  4. Turn off your phone just for work, let it ring to voicemail. If its an emergency.. then take care of it.

Did your job provide that cell phone to you? If they did you kinda have an obligation to answer it. If not.. let it ring to voicemail!

My boyfriend once had to tell a guy how to program a machine on 3 different vacations. In fact on the last one, just as we arrived at our destination his job called! Sadly is in his contract to answer all calls, no matter where he is since he has a company phone.

  5. Did you know that where you're going (wherever it is) has no mobile reception?

    What a shame  :-)

  6. h**l no, its not rude!

You're gone, you are not at work, you ARE ON VACATION!

Just leave it and enjoy, dont let those a******s bug you.

  7. Make sure your boss clearly knows that you might not be able to pick up your phone at ALL. After all, you might not even have service.. or maybe just not for his calls ;P

  8. Tell him that this is family time and that your phone will be off! Also tell him if something arises and he needs something in an emergengy, that you will check it for messages every once in a while and if you can that you will call him back when you can. Other than that you will see him when you get back.

  9. The whole point of vacation is to

    get away from the everyday.

It's up to you.  Will you go back

to the same boss.  Will he have

    an attitude because you didn't

    answer his call?

You have to work with him.

    What do you think?

  10. You could check your emails/messages once a day or other day but don't leave it on 24/7.  Tell him he can leave a message and you will try to get back when you are available but that he should contact someone in the office for an immediate response.

  11. Turn your phone off.   Check your voicemail and texts once a day, but DON'T REPLY TO THEM unless there is a huge emergency.

  12. No - you're on vacation to take a break from the world.  Good for you!

  13. It is absolutely fine to shut your phone off. And I would just let him know you won't have your pc or phone with you. Just as a curtisy so he doesn't think your in his pocket in a pinch. Be proactive. Provide a back up for him and on your voice mai.

If you are on call. Let them know there is compensation for that and that does not mean "only IF they call" but for the time that your expected to have the phone on. Being 9-5 or what have you.

I would make my point..Well I can't even have cocktails if I want on my vacation in case you call and want  my full brain engaged. They may rethink this :-)

    Enjoy you time OFF !!

  14. Not at all. Shut it down for everyone. Give yourself some peace and some rest. If you are still communicating with your boss or co-workers, it means you are still at work.

  15. If you need a vacation, why should you be on call? It's not like you can go home early to go do work. IT's best if you rest up and energize so you can work more efficiently when you get back. You dont' have to "shut it down" but you can turn it off and listen to your voice mails every night in case there's a true emergency. You don't need the extra stress, tell your boss you'd appreciate if he'd only call in an emergency!

  16. No, it's not rude. You're trying to rest and get away from life and enjoy yourself. It's not rude.

  17. No.  If someone asks say your phone died.

  18. That depends on if you want to talk to anyone else or not. If you're ok with being out of contact, just tell your close friends and family that you will check for messages in the evening, if anything important comes up.

Kudos to you for taking real time away from work! My boss will leave for a week, and we can't reach him by cell phone. Sometimes he won't call to check in at all and this is HIS business! Yet, when my co-worker and I leave for even a day we can almost guarantee that he will call us. Talk about a double standard!

  19. NOOOOO! Shut it off! He has no right to do that if you are on VACATION! Unless, of course, you and your boss have a close relationship and it doesn't bother you. If it does, TURN THAT SUCKER OFF!!! That's insane and nervy of him to even tell you that!

  20. The whole point in taking a vacation.. is to be on vacation. Which means time off from work, and everything else.

It is not rude to shut your phone off because this is your personal time, and your boss should understand and respect that.

  21. Your on vacation, turn off your phone.  If someone close to you needs to reach you because of an emergency, then they can leave a message for you at the hotel.

You should have told your boss that you wouldn't be dealing with business related matters while on vacation, that you would check your e-mail and phone messages when you get back to work.

  22. It's only rude if you told them that you would be reachable by phone and then aren't. Other than that you are on vacation and under no obligation to work remotely.

Take the calls you want to take and ignore the others, just make sure you aren't talking to co-workers who could inadvertently let the boss know that you are in fact reachable and ignoring him.

    Enjoy your rest.

  23. Dont even take the phone with you.  Leave it home and problem solved.

  24. Turn your phone off, enjoy your vacation. Life is way too short.

  25. Absolutely not. Vacation time is for you. Don't feel obligated to talk to anyone- even your boss.
