depends how old they are and where they plan to go. if youre in your early 20s. each of you should be with at least one person. 24 and over. its fine. just be careful

Yes it is safe and you can totally ignore the comments from "Tim" who has clearly assumes that his lifestyle choices are the same ones for everyone!

Some females actually travel around Europe on their own without a problem, so with four of you (safety in numbers) you will be fine as long as long you just observe the basic safety rules that you would anyway

The idea about checking if you can get a room with the four of you in a hostel is a good one.  Also make sure that you stick together especially in the evening.  

Observe the local customs (e.g. dress code) of the places that you travel to and just be friendly and you won't have a problem

The biggest problem that tourists generally encounter is pickpocketing (and this is worldwide and not just Europe).  Pickpockets do target tourists because the chances that they will be carrying amounts of cash is greater that it would be with locals.  So take care how you carry money & important documents at all times (big cities and little villages alike) and always store your ATM card & a photocopy of your passport (& other documents) seperately from your cash & passport.

Read up before hand online or in guides where you want to go, so you have an idea before-hand where to go, how to get there and how easy it is to get accomodation, and maybe even learn a few phrases (to raise a smile to get talking with locals if nothing else)

It depends on your age. If you are sexually promiscuous and like to smoke hash then you have it made.

If you are a prude and/or not willing to get high then don't go out at night.

Sure!  I went alone and stayed in hostels and was perfectly safe.  There are a lot of other people traveling alone so it's fun to hook up to go to museums or lunch or whatever.  You can stay in hotels but hostels are fun so you can meet new people. :)

I did this a couple of years ago for 6 weeks- it was 3 girls for most of the trip and a 4th joined us for part of it.  We mostly stayed in hostels or small/cheap inns/hotels.  We felt safe everywhere we went (France, Spain, Italy, Greece).  The farther south in Italy we went, the more attention from guys we got. :)  We did not venture into the 'male dominant' countries like Morocco, Turkey, etc.

If there are 4 of you, I would recommend looking into some of the inns/hotels because in many of the places we could get a room for 4 for nearly the same or a little cheaper than some of the hostels (for 4 people).  Then you will usually have your own bathroom, or a more private one, and a private room for the 4 of you.
