  1. after the natalie halloway bit i would not let my daughter go anywhere outside the US. until she was grown and married.

  2. Yes. I was there with friends a few years ago. Just use common sense about safety and don't go anywhere with suspicious strangers.

  3. Absolutely! I studied abroad in Rome last year. I found myself alone in the city a lot, just wandering, shopping, sight seeing, etc. It was wonderful. I also backpacked across western Europe for 2 1/2 weeks by myself... and I was only 19! As long as you're ALWAYS aware of what's around you, you'll be just fine. Don't drink toooo much, but don't hesitate to try the vino. :-)

  4. The world is only as safe as you make it. One of my friends walks around cities at night alone and she isn't worried. Another friend was really scared to take the public transport after dark. Just don't say you are americans when asked :), say you're from north america. Be cautious as you normally would be in any city and nothing will happen.

  5. Yes. There are of course many guidelines to follow when travelling abroad. Try to stay as inconspicuous as possible. Always stay together in the group; even pairs can be risky. Learn some of the basics of the language. i.e. directions to the hotel. And don't just learn how to ask because tha answer will most likely be in Italian also. Have fun and be safe enough.

  6. I'm 16, and I was in Rome with a school trip this past winter.  Groups of us often went off on our own, and it overall struck me as a pretty safe place.  (Then again, I go to NYC frequently, so maybe it just seemed safe by comparison...)

Just make sure that you're very aware of your bags at all times--while violence didn't seem to be a threat, we were consistenly warned about theft from the gypsies.  Keep out of the subways if you can, and keep your belongings close to you.  Also, avoid seemingly innocent little kids--unfortunately, they can be gypsies' assistants.  But in terms of general safety, I think overall it's a pretty safe area.

  7. yes but never go any where alone, always stay together. make sure ur money is safe.

  8. Venice is a very safe place. I have seen families travelling in boats during mid night. There is always people around you where evever you go.  Rome is relatively safe ( as safe as any city can be!). Italians are nice folks.

In rome you need to watch out for pick pockers and hand bag snatchers.  In any city you need to know what you are doing. Stay in places where there is crowd, avoid moving around after dark to isolated places and be aware of what is going around you.

I am not an Italian bye the way. So I am not biased. If you compare New York or London, it is a pretty safe place.  The posisbility of geting shot by a mugger is more in NYC than in any Italian citiy.
