  1. I love Brazil but I have never been to Rio because I think it is too dangerous. If you speak Portuguese is going to be easier. Try to stay in groups there.

  2. Yes as long as you do not take any of those "one on one"  country side tours.

Check into the water if it is okay to drink in the big city it is but in some country side towns ? ? ? ?

And use common sense when you are there.

If you ever ever EVER get a funny feeling about a place no matter where it is look for a cabbie to take you back to you hotel or motel.

Make friends with the desk clerk in advance not money just talk to him her.

Tell the desk clerk where you are going for the day when you leave to go some where for a long time.

Other wise just tell them. "I'll be right back and a quick wave".

So there is a record where you went that day if anything does happen

Ask the clerk where the places to go in town are and if they the hotel bla bla have any special discounts they have to offer.

But keep an on going schedule of calling family friends back home, at a certain time of the day if only to leave a message on the answering machine.

This is to have some one monitoring you and give you piece of mind that someone will know something is wrong if you do not call with in a few hours of an established time to do so.

Then the next time you go and you will return you will know where you are and where to go already and it will be just another vacation.

And if possible stay at the same place you do this time, They have a memory that is like a savants memory of people believe me.

So enjoy and be safe and listen to that little voice in you that might say  in a squeaky voice, "I don't know about that place"

  3. Rambo,

I have an answer for a similar question. See the link, please.

  4. Rio is fairly safe if you're streetsmart. As usual, remember to be on the lookout. Avoid the favela areas as well. As one contributor said, make the hotel desk people your bestfriends. They can offer a LOT of help.

  5. It should be.

Brazil is a fairly safe country.

Just hire a guide and you should be safe.
