  1. Sure.  Millions of people do it every year.

  2. Yep

  3. Yes.

Of course it depends on where you're going and how safe your travel habits are, how safe your housing accommodations are, and how actively you ensure your own personal safety.

    General rules of thumb:

    * Try not to travel alone. It's easy enough to find travel buddies (particularly if you're studying - a classmate - or if you're staying in a hostel). If you must, keep in touch with your family/friends back home and let them know about where you'll be and when if you travel. Don't go out at night on your own or if you do, don't meander. Walk with a purpose and people will generally leave you alone. Stick to crowded areas.

    * Ask for help if you are lost.

    * Don't carry large amounts of money with you.

    * Keep a copy of your passport/personal identification somewhere other than where you keep the original in case the original is stolen.

    * Lock your door wherever you are staying.

    * Don't advertise the fact that you're foreign - just do your best to get along.

    * Use common sense and your intuition - if a place or a person just doesn't feel right, avoid it/them.
