Is it safe for americans to go on vacation to dubai, or abu dhabi? Any thing you know about the place?

It looks beautiful, but im not sure if it is safe, or worth going, Anything you know would be great

My son spend about a week in the UAE a little over a year ago.  Searched on the web and found a 4-star hotel for about $60 a night.  Said it was a fantastic experience.  Enjoyed seeing all of the bazaars (especially the one that specializes in gold).  Also saw Will Smith there.  There are many Americans there and indicated that he felt very safe.  Did not have to worry about things being stolen as much as he did in Europe.  Got to see the world's only 6 star hotel and an indoor downhill skiing area.  

Note: he spent time in both dubai and abu dhabi!
