Question:

Is it safe for an American to drive to Mexico?

I am traveling from San Antonio to Guadalajara. I have considered flying, but think it would be much cheaper to drive there. I also like driving on road trips because I can stop anywhere that looks interesting. I'm sure the large cities are used to seeing Americans all the time, but I've heard that it can be dangerous for Americans in smaller places. Would it be relatively safe to drive there, or should I just fork out the extra money and fly?

  6. In general, I think it's OK by day but I would avoid driving at night.  I think it's also best not to travel by car alone.

  7. You will be fine.  Do ot drive after sunset...due to poor roads, animals on the roads at times.  People are kind, you will be safe.  See websites below for driving in Mexico info, car permit, and insurance info. Another option is the bus. They are clean, comfy, inexpensive and there are buses directly from San Antonio.
