I live in an apartment complex and he comes into contact with people, children and occasionally other animals should I be worried about Parvo? But I have no other choice he has to go outside and use the potty. I am not going to take him to parks or petstores until 6 months.

  1. Of course! It will be good for him to practice being around lots of people so he can get used to it. If you keep him away from everyone except you he will become shy and unfriendly.

  2. Parvo is NOT airborne.

As long as your puppy has been fully vaccinated he/she should be okay.  However, if he/she just got her last shot, you must wait at least a week before taking he/she out.  Vaccinations at any age are not 100%, they are precautions.  Although, puppies are more likely to contract parvo than adult dogs.  They are also more likely to die from parvo than an adult dog.

I totally understand your concern and your question is not a dumb one.  I had a puppy who died of parvo and she DIDN'T leave the house.  Parvo can come from anywhere.  We can track it in the house with our shoes, a fly could land on an infected dogs p**p and come in contact with your dog.  There is only so much you can do.

If you are that concerned about taking your dog outside, try potty training your dog with pee pads for now.  And for socialization, have lots of friends and relatives come over and play with the dog.

  3. oh definitely It's perfectly fine!

as long as he doesn't run around biting everyone then yeah you're good

  4. Well there is always a chance he can get it.

those shots are not a blocker or anything

they just help make the risk of getting it, lower.

All my dogs got there shots,

my 2 older dogs are 3 haven't got it yet.

same as my 5 month old.

you know you will never know really.

but don't sit there worrying about it(like i did lol)

you just got to hope for the best.

    Good Luck.

  5. Yes, its absolutely ok...and the biggest thing here is his shots..he's had all the series that he needs so he will be fine.  You might not want to have him interact with "strange" dogs until you've given his immune system a little bit more time to build itself up, but as far as going out to go potty/play, he'll be fine. Just work with him on his ground-manners so that when he is bigger he doesn't become a pup that drags you around on his leash.

  6. Sure,in fact,it's very good for him to get exercise and socialization with people and other dogs.As long as he's had all of his shots,he's good to go.

  7. OMG, this is the fourth dumbest question I have answered. YES. It's not like the dog has rabies or anything. It is good to have a social dog who gets familiar with not only people but the neighborhood and its surroundings. They are generally more agreeable and get along better if they know what's going on outside their home.

  8. I agree with the answers concerning with Parvo... it's a deadly puppy virus. It's airborn... if a dog walks by with it while your puppy is around, chances are your puppy can catch it. Look it up on the net and other puppy illnessess.

  9. No, don't listen to them...even though he is vaccinated for Parvo they are not truly save till 12 months. That is why they have a booster shot at 12 months. If tests are poor another shot after that may be needed. And Parvo is everywhere, once an area is contaminated it is there for years. An example, what if another person with a cute puppy takes it out in public, and it unknowingly has the virus. It poops or vomits, well that area is infected. Then some unsuspecting person takes there puppy there also, even tough it has been vaccinated it can still contract it for up to a year. You just can't be sure, cause you can't see it. So why risk it!

  10. ya just keep a close eye on him

  11. Take him now to everywhere - as long as he is current on shots, get him accustomed to the "real world".  By the time he is 6 months old, his main formative months will be gone and you may end up with a dog who is fearful of new places.

Take him to the pet store, take him to the park, take him everywhere and let him see the real world and the people and other animals in it.  You will end up with a well adjusted puppy.

  12. Hi Corrina

Much of the information given here is inaccurate.  If you want to be certain that your pup has immunity for Parvo, talk to your Vet about Titer Testing.  This is really the only way to know for sure.  You also don't mention what breed he is, and some breeds are more suceptable to Parvo than others.

Here's a site that will give you some helpful information perhaps.

    Best of luck.

  13. Absolutely Not!  You should keep him locked in a dark closet until he is at least 5 years old.  No animal should ever come in contact with any human, especially a child.

  14. YES

  15. The most recent research that I've read on this is that parvo vaccinations aren't always affective until after the dog is 20 weeks old.  That's 5 months.  So, even if the pup's vaccinations are up to date, they are still at higher risk of getting parvo until they've received their last vaccination at 20 weeks of age.

I wouldn't be parinoid about it though.  You do need to start potty training well before 20 weeks of age.  So you do need to take the pup outside.  I would just avoid taking him to places like the dog park or petsmart until after 20 weeks.  I would however, get him into a puppy obedience class as soon as all his vaccinations are done.

  16. It is actually good to get your puppy out and about the earlier the better to socialize with other pups and dogs. By three months they should have at least 2 sets of shots.  Get her/ him out and about!

  17. puppies are actually trained to use the bathroom indoors on some type of bathroom mat for dogs, you may want to ask the vet about going outside but because your puppy is soo young, try taking it outside less until maybe 6 months, just like you mentioned, i've seen these 3 month old puppies and they didn't go outside for a whilee

  18. If you puppy is up to date on his shots then you should'nt have to wait until he is 6 months old, i had my puppy vacinated at 12 weeks and we were told to leave it week before taking him out which we did and he was fine, 6 months is a long time to wait before taking him out. Speak to your vet maybe its different rules for different breeds but i doubt it.
