Is it safe just to turn k**b til pilot light goes out? I have no markings on furnace just a red mark.?

I need to turn pilot light out , I just want to make sure i am turning right k**b and that it is safe.

there is only 1 way to turn the valve that will turn it off. This will be the 1 on top of the gas valve, not the face. There should also be a valve in the pipe going to the gas valve. Off for it would be with handle crossing the pipe.

Yes it is, try to light it with a match to see if it is off off and all the gas is gone.

You don't even need to do that.  Just turn off the valve located on the black supply pipe.  Turn it so the flat "blade" is at right angles to the pipe.
