Is it safe/legal for me to carry a container full of gasoline in my car?

I live in New Mexico so I am used to driving long vast distances where there are no gas stations in between. My car is a compact sedan and only holds about 11 gallons. Is there a spare container (say, 5 gallons) which I could use to haul gasoline in the trunk? Where can I buy it?

  1. Auto parts stores carry fuel containers to hold 5 or 6 gallons. In Colorado it's legal. Make sure its sealed (you should not smell gas) and use a bungee chord to make sure it does not fall over when you corner or brake.

  2. No it is not safe........the fumes will kill you plus the additional weight will reduce your gas mileage..

  3. sure just get the good can

  4. Yup! Especially when you anticipate a long ride and there is a scarcity of gas stations along the way. Buy a container designed  for storing gasolines. That'll be safer.

  5. Yes, however carrying gas is only meant for a short distance like the gas you buy for your mower. Be sure it is in a red gas container only that is properly vented. I would add the gas to my tank as soon as possible, too. Gas isn't meant to be hauled in a backseat or trunk for a long distance. It's just too dangerous and explosive.

  6. Yes, you can get 5 gallon tank at any auto parts store.

And you can carry it in your TRUNK.  But it is not safe to always carry gasoline.  They are really meant for emergency use only.

    Good Luck...

  7. Safe AND legal, make sure it's a sealing can designed for gasoline, and make sure it's secured properly...
