Is it safe to carry gasoline around in a coke bottle?

Due to inaccuracy in my car's fuel gage, I want to have a two liter coke bottle of gas in the trunk of the car so I wouldn't be stranded and run out of gas. Is doing so safe? Or would the high temperatures in the car (between 90*F and 120*F) make it unsafe to do so?

  1. It's unsafe and illegal.  It's also illegal for a gas station to allow you to fill anything but an authorized gas container.

It WILL explode in your trunk when the bottle gets warm and could kill you and your passengers.

Some real gas containers have a breather valve that will release some of the pressure, but in your trunk, that's unsafe too.

Get the guage fixed, or stop for gas more, but don't be stupid.  Don't carry fuel in your trunk.

  2. well any container you fill with gas is going to be unsafe to an extent, any air you leave in the container is going to turn into an explosive air fuel mix.  why not use an approved gas can?  If you are going to do it make sure you don't leave any air in the container.

  3. no it is not safe. Just buy a small gas can

  4. No, it isn't because gasoline is extremely volatile/explosive. Carrying gasoline in any container not specifically designed for that purpose is illegal. Keeping gasoline in your trunk, even in an approved container is very dangerous because you are trapping the escaping gasoline vapors in your trunk. These vapors are just as volatile if not more so than the gasoline itself.

  5. As far safety I'm not sure ,but I do know that it's illegal.

  6. I do not advise this

  7. sure its safe go ahead and try it.  just let everybody know where you are driving so we can stay away.  its called "natural selection"

  8. No, it's not safe AT ALL!!! It can explode and I think it's illegal.  Spend the 5-15 dollars for a real portable gas can at walmart.  They're relatively inexpensive and definitely worth it so you don't ruin your car/injure yourself by putting the gas in anything else.  Or don't let your car get below 1/4 tank.  I'm always afraid of running out of gas, so I just don't let my tank get below 1/2 tank if I can help it.  Gas can break down if you leave it in the container for long enough, so I would suggest trying to keep your car over 1/2 tank if you can.  It's kinda a pain to fill up that often, but a lot safer than carrying around gas all the time!!!  If it was me, I wouldn't feel safe having gas in my trunk all of the time.  It can possibly even explode if it's in the portable gas can long enough.  It's better to be safe than sorry, try to keep your gas tank full enough to not worry about it.
