Question:

Is it safe to clean a refrigerator with Lysol water?

I did not have access to hot water and anti-bacterial soap so I cleaned my refrigerator with lysol water before thinking that the chemical may not be safe with a closed refrigerator door with lack of air circulation when it comes to storing food. Will my food be safe or should I throw it out and will any additional food be safe in there or should I let it air out? Thanks for you help

  1. I think it is best to let it air out before you put anything there especially fruits and vegetables because they may take up the smell. You should get a box of baking soda and put it in the refridgerator. The baking soda traps the scent of anything and doesn't have the fridge smelling.

  2. You are safe using Lysol even if you used full strength. What you need to do is now buy some Arm & Hammer Baking soda and using hot water with a generous amount of the baking soda, wash the inner walls down and then leave two to three open box's of the baking soda inside the refrigerator to absorb the remaining odors. In a month you'll probably not smell anything and can replace the box's of soda with fresh new ones to continue to keep food odors to a minimum.

  3. Yes, if it smells strong, you might want to go over it with water with baking soda dissolved in it.  It won't -hurt- the food, but it might make it smell funny.  But the fumes won't get into the food and make it unsafe to eat, or anything like that.

  4. I guess it really depends on how strong it was when you cleaned it. Does it still smell like Lysol? I'm not sure it will harm you...but it may make the food taste funny. If it still smells strong....let it air out for a few minutes. Put some of the things like mayo, eggs and other things that spoil in a cooler while it is airing out.
