Is it safe to cook on REBAR?

I want to build a grill, and colled rolled round bar is too expensive, and i cant find expanded metal in the size i need, and that i can afford.

Has anyone ever cooked on rebar?

So my question is, Is it safe to cook on rebar,

What do I need to do to make it safe to cook on?

any and all help is greatly appreciated!

  2. shoot, it's no different that cooking on metal grate in large commercial grilles, you just have to keep it oiled to prevent rust. but, you have some welding to do to make an actual grate with perpendicular rods. why not just use the the rebar as supports for a regular metal grate, or grille plate?

  3. as long as it's not coated with anything it's probably fine.  it's not brittle.

  4. shouldn't be a problem, its the same steel as expanded metal.expanded metal can be cut to size. see a welding shop and ask if they will cut it to size for you

  5. It's safe, but the ridges on the rebar make turning the food difficult.  You might have to grind off the lumps

    Those #^%^!%$ Forest Service barbeques often use rebar and I hate htem!

  6. should be no problem as long as it's not the painted type of rebar that they use in highway construction now
