  1. Wow. You're getting a lot of conflicting answers. Here's the scoop:

Dry ice is just frozen CO2, carbon dioxide. It smokes when put in a liquid or just at room temp because it sublimates, changes directly from a solid to a gas, not bothering with the pesky step of being a liquid.

So, yes, it IS perfectly safe to drink/eat anything it has been in, just don't touch the solid dry ice itself, you can easily damage your skin.

And another helpful hint: you are POURING carbon dioxide into the room with all that "fog". Make sure you have enough ventilation! You could get really light headed with enough exposure!

    Have fun!

  2. no way dude!

  3. NO!

  4. hardspacecore is correct but carbon dioxide will kill you if you breath too much of it. First you will go unconscious.

Dry ice in punch isnt deadly so long as you dont eat it but it dosent sound like a good idea

  5. Yes you can; Just don't eat the ice.

  6. no u dont drink of eat dry ice

  7. NO dry ice has chemicals in it that could seriously harm you

  8. Yes, just don't eat the ice. Dry ice is just the solid version of carbon dioxide, which is what is used to carbonate soda.

  9. no

  10. Yes.  Just don't put any of the dry ice in your mouth -- it is REALLY cold.

  11. do not get a piece of it in mouth it is so cold it will burn mouth

but as long as it doesnt go in mouth then yes safe

  12. h**l NO!!!!!

    IT WILL KILL YOU!!!!!

and freeze your esophagus and stomach, and will freeze all your organs man!

  13. Dry ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide. It isn't actually "ice" as we think of frozen water. It is not safe to consume in any way.

  14. it's cool as long as you don't take it in or touch it other wise you will get burned

put a chunk in the glass then fill with ice then the punch and use a straw. you'll still get the same bubbling effect and fog.

  15. I wouldn't

    ConEdison advice on dry ice

    how to use dry ice

        * Keep dry ice wrapped in newspaper, paper bags, or towels for safety and to extend the life of the dry ice.

        * When using dry ice for cooling foods, place the dry ice in the BOTTOM of a cooler, refrigerator, or insulated container.

        * Do not allow foods to have direct contact with the dry ice. Place an insulating material — such as cardboard — between the dry ice and food.

        * Do not put dry ice in your drink.

        * When using dry ice to keep foods frozen, place the dry ice ON TOP of the items you want frozen.

        * A small block of dry ice (5 to 7 pounds) wrapped in an insulating container has an effective cooling time of 18 to 24 hours.

    Safe Handling of Dry Ice

        * Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide — avoid direct contact with the skin.

        * Handle it with care — use gloves, a towel, etc. to insulate your fingers when handling the dry ice.

        * If you must transport dry ice in your car, either open the windows or set the air conditioner to “fresh” outside air rather than “recirculate.” Carbon dioxide build-up can be hazardous in a closed space.

        * Keep children at a safe distance from dry ice at all times!

    Safe Disposal of Dry Ice

        * Do not dispose of dry ice in a sewer, sink, toilet, garbage disposal, garbage chute, etc.

        * Allow leftover dry ice to evaporate (turn into a gas) in a well-ventilated area where no buildup of carbon dioxide vapor can occur.

        * Keep dry ice away from children and pets.

  16. yeah as long as you dont eat or touch the dry ice. pour the punch into a glass without dry ice in it.you can't eat it because it is so cold that it burns you!

the person above me got it right!!!!

notice how it says its fine as long as you dont INGEST it!

  17. Absolutely not.

  18. you should be fine as long as your tongue or any part of your mouth touch the dry ice.

  19. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!! Dry ice will burn your skin if you even touch it.. let alone drink it!

  20. Yes but don't put the dry ice in your cup, just scoop out the punch and add regular ice if you'd like.

The people saying absolutely not are giving you incorrect information:

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. It is special because it doesn’t melt. Dry ice goes straight from solid for to gas form. This is called sublimation. If you put dry ice in water, the carbon dioxide will turn to gas and then bubble out. The carbon dioxide gas itself is non-toxic, but there are two things to be careful about: 1) dry ice and the carbon dioxide it gives off are very very cold, and 2) the carbon dioxide can "displace" air. If you put a large amount of dry ice in a walk-in freezer, close the door and wait for a significant amount to sublimate, the freezer will be full of carbon dioxide gas. It is not poisonous, but there will be no oxygen in there to breathe and it will have to be aired out. Most people do not have enough dry ice to worry about this kind of thing, but manufacturers and vendors of dry ice have to be careful about safe storage of their product. Dry ice should be handled with gloves or tongs so as not to cause frostbite.

Adding dry ice to drinks is fine if you are very careful not to injest any of the frozen dry ice. http://www.dryiceinfo.com gives some suggestions for use with, for example, large bowls of punch. The dry ice will make the punch give off a heavy fog (the cold carbon dioxide bubbles out of the punch, condenses water vapor, and sinks to the floor). This can be quite a lot of fun at Halloween parties, as your fruit punch can look like a seething witches’ brew.

You should use 2-4 pounds of dry ice per gallon of liquid at room temperature. Use large chunks of dry ice instead of small ones. Dry ice is heavier than water, so it will sink to the bottom. This is a very important part, when the dry ice is almost gone, a layer of water will freeze around it. This chunk will float to the top. Inside the regular ice is still a piece of dry ice. This must be removed. NEVER injest dry ice, even when it is coated with regular ice. This can cause frostbite inside your stomach! When ladling punch out of the punch bowl, do not include any dry ice, or even ordinary ice as it may have a piece of dry ice inside. Ordinary ice can be added later.

  21. It's just frozen carbon dioxide.

  22. NO!  Touching dry ice can cause severe burns, and consuming it can be fatal.  ESPECIALLY don't serve it to children.

  23. yes, it is completly safe, i've done it before, and i'm still alive and perfectly fine. you just can't hold it with your bare fingers, that's all. it's still ice but waaaay colder.

  24. i'm pretty sure dry ice isn't supposed to be eatten or taken in.. in any way so definately NO
