Question:

Is it safe to drive a 4 cylinder car through snow?

I'm planning on making a trip to Brianhead, Utah to go snowboarding and I drive an 04' Hyundai Elantra. I've driven in snow before but not with the car that I have now. And seeing that Utah just had a snow storm, is it safe to drive my car there. If so, most likely I will need snow chains, but I'm just worried that my car won't make it up the mountain. I've read the road conditions to get to Brianhead and it recommends cars with 4WD or snow chains. So any advice, I would appreciate. Thanks

  1. you need 4WD.

  2. I have a Hyundai Tiburon with 260,000 miles on it.  It has the same 4 cylinder as your car and my car has seen 11 brutal winters.

All you need is good all-season tires and drive slow.

  3. You should be alright just think before you make any stunts and make sure your tires are in good shape when I say good shape I mean good tread, proper tire pressure you know basic driving but make sure they are all season tires.

  4. No car is perfectly safe in the snow. That car is probably more likely to get stuck than a 4wd suv or truck. I dont know if thats front wheel drive, but it would be a little better to have than rear wheel drive. Also, when driving on snow covered roads, it will perform better in first gear or(1) just take it slow.

  5. Only if you're driving an Adobe.

  6. yer little 4 cl will make it . But there's things out there you should know . Snow chains are a must . On some mountains during a heavy snow they will close the roads until they get them plowed . Snow plow's are few and far between . Don't count on them for help . Stay to the main roads , you don't have 4wd . Keep a good cell phone with ya. Take extra cash as toe trucks aint cheep and there's a good chance you'll need one . Take planty of warm clothes and food . If you do go off the road ( Stay with your car ) make sure your tail pipe is not buried and stay warm until help comes .  I travel that area regularly and with a little planning and a lot of useing your head for something besides a hat rack will get you a long way . In the winter time , it can be fun , and it can be down right dangerous if ya aint careful . I go through that area about once or twice a week . Useually twice , once going and once coming back . I drive a truck pulling two trailers . Just use your head and you'll be fine . Have fun and good luck .
