Question:

Is it safe to drive with a bent rear axle?

Someone drove into my car recently. I was stationary and she was pulling out of a side road. She drove straight into my rear wheel, denting it and splitting the tyre. I have put the spare on, but a garage has told me that the rear axle is bent. I have to get two repair quotes for my insurance company, but need to use the car in the meantime. I have been driving it around since the accident, and have only noticed a very slight pulling to the right.

  1. No

  2. Driving is safe, it's the crashing part that's dangerous.

  3. dont worry..i drove around for years with a bent axle...if u r worried drive slow...

  4. If it's only slightly bent, and you can compensate for the pull, it's not terribly dangerous, but it isn't recommended.  If you have to do it for a few days, fine.  But over the long haul, you're at a MINIMUM going to get uneven tire wear.

  5. No....it's pretty irresponsible!!

  6. No it is very unsafe and it will damage other component on the vehicle.

  7. get it fixed. better safe then sorry. but also may cause some more damage then already have..

  8. short-term you're probably OK but don't drive fast.  don't ignore it, however.  the dent could have compromised the structural integrity of the entire axle, and you don't want it to fail under normal stress.  if the DEALER says it should be replaced, make sure it is and that the insurance will cover it before having the work don.

  9. The car is pulling into the direction of the bent...."i" do not think "U" wanna do that....

  10. Not a good idea, it has to be fixed it will blow up the tires.

  11. I wouldn't drive the car any longer. You're just risking a total break and who knows, if you cause an accident with a known defect like that your insurance company will probably drop you. Don't get jammed up, do without the car for now. Get it fixed.

  12. I have never drove in my life... but that sounds so dangerous... you should actually make sure nothing is broken. Money is not important when someone's life is at stake!!!!!

  13. No.

    Not safe and not legal.

If you had any accident with your car, then you would face prosecution for knowingly driving a dangerous vehicle. It would also invalidate your insurance - another offence.

  14. I wouldn't assume it was safe to drive with any part not in the original shape it was in, it is pt on the car in a certain shape for a reason, really this is your life and saftey so don't trust it, get it fixed.

  15. I'm no mechanic, but I'm pretty sure you need to have your car looked at by professionals. Any pressure on the axle is bound to mess up your tires, at the least. At worst, you could lose control of the car and have ana acident. Good luck.

  16. NOT SAFE AT ALL!!

  17. I wouldn't drive it.

  18. Like the other two said, no don't drive it.  If you do, it will cause further damage to axle, gears, bearings and wheel.  Depending on the state you live, under the insurance laws, this would be an undriveable vehicle and if you aren't at fault, the other carrier would owe you for a rental while yours was in the shop. Again, depends on the state. ( In Florida, it's the law)

  19. Nope, its pretty dumb

  20. Not very safe. You should stop driving it for sure.

  21. Not a good idea, you break something else

  22. Of course it is not safe.
