Since I was a kid, Ive always heard people say its not safe to eat fish in the Monsoon, but no one has ever given me a reason why that is so. Is it just superstition or custom, or is there a real health hazard?

  1. The custom is followed as this is the fish breeding season.

You donot want to kill a female fish with hundreds of eggs that could provide you an equal number of fish in the following season and this is the time fishermen donot venture out as the sea's are rough and not suitable for fishing.

  2. spawning season

do not eat or at least try to avoid it in the months which do not have a "r" in them

  3. It is perfectly safe if it is properly cooked, and not rotten to start with. The reason people say that is because fish, specially the hilsa, spawns during the early part of the monsoon, and if the young ones are killed, it may affect the ecology, as well as cause a shortage later on.
