  1. Butte is the way to go, Ibuprofen isn't for horses!

    Butte is aspirin.

  2. Nonononono! Two reasons - one, ibuprofen will interect unpredictably with the liver, kidneys and stomach. Two: bute also interacts with the liver, kidneys are stomach and so giving it with ibuprofen will exacerbate these effects. If bute isn't controlling the pain you need to speak to your vet about it. DO NOT give devils claw with bute as it is basically aspirin and will predispose to stomach ulcers.

There are newer things you can try for stiff joints, such as pernamax tablets or patches (green-lipped mussel extract) and topical antiinflammatory gels. Have a chat with your vet about it.

  3. JJH....Bute (phenlybutazone) is not aspirin! It is closer to ibruprofen in likeness than aspirin. It is a none-steroidal anti inflammatory drug which reduces pain and inflammation.

It's not advisable to give your horse 'human' medicines, stick to the bute.

My horse has a similar problem and to keep him comfortable and happily hacking I feed him Equine America's 1000mg Glucosamine + MSM, Devil's Claw and Cod Liver Oil.

  4. Phenylbute...aka...Bute is an anti-inflammatory.  It is for the relief of inflammatory conditions associated with the musculoskeletal system in horses.

*typed that right off the bottle of Bute I'm looking at*

In other words...reduce the inflammation...it will reduce the pain.  It's horse ibuprophen.  So, you are already giving 'ibuprophen' to him.  Leave the human stuff to humans.

Check into Glucosamine to help the joints...

  5. Bute is not aspirin. Phenylbutazone is the name of the drug.  It is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID).

Never give a drug formulated for humans to your horse...do you feed him roast beef and gravy?  Why not?

  6. No I don'y think so :P i had a TB which suffered from arthritis and he benifited from NAF Superflex, glucosomine and Cortaflex. These are more natural than bute, so I would use these instead :)

  7. i wouldnt do it.. just stick to the bute.. also Glucosamine for horses is good.

i Gave my TB that and her joints are much better and she has improved alot.

    =)

  8. No No No No No .......... Have you get the message yet?

You should never give drugs for humans to horses.  You could do untold damage to the internal organs of a horse, for whom these medicines are not designed.

Stick with the bute or anything else the vet might suggest and keep the horse moving to free up the joints.  Feed supplementary oils/vitamins according to vets instruction.

  9. Only give your horse Paracetamol if it as a headache but don't give it Ibuprofen if it as Asama consult your vetanery

  10. I've got a very stiff power stallion xx

  11. NO DONT GIVE YOUR HORSE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is made for humans not for horses!

  12. No it isn't safe. The bute is already doing the job anyway - different drugs react differently in different animals and you should never give any drugs that are not licensed for general use, as it might kill your animal. Some very common every day things are terrible in some animals e.g. Savlon is very dangerous for cats. Penicillin kills guinea pigs etc.

  13. i doubt it

you should really ask the vet before giving him any drugs like this

they can have different effects on animals than humans

    :]

  14. are you serious??! paracetamol is 4 humans not horses. would u give yourself bute for a headache??! stick to the bute, try glucosamine or flexivite or something like that and ask your vet about anything u do.

  15. NEVER EVER GIVE YOUR HORSE HUMAN MEDICINE WITHOUT PRIOR AGREEMENT FROM A VET.

Although in reality a human does is likely to be very small on a horse you do not know what the effects will be.  Bute is the horse equivalent so stick to that.

  16. NO! what are you thinking. For goodness sake.

Devils Claw is a natural "bute".

You can add apple cider vinegar to feeds for stiffness too.
