Question:

Is it safe to go out of my resort in Mexico?

Don't mean tht in a demeaning way to mexicans, just i have 2 kids (10 and 11) and we hate to be tied to a resort. We ventured out in Dom Rep and had problems with taxi drivers and locals. Is mexico likely to be the same or are the locals generally friendly?We are staying in Playa del carmen.

Playa del Carmen is very safe. You will be much safer in PDC than you would be in any large American or Canadian city. The crime rate is very low.

Also, you don't need to take taxi's, you can take the colectivo with other tourists and hotel workers. It will cost you only a few dollars and they run every couple of minutes. They are white mini vans that run north and south from Tulum-PDC-Cancun, just walk to the highway at the end of your resort and flag one down. They will drop you off a couple of blocks from 5th ave. (where all the shops are) in PDC and you can catch them at the same spot on the way back, just tell the driver the name of your resort and they will let you off at the appropriate place. They will save you a bunch of money compared to taxi's.

Ive never met anyone from Mexico that didn't feel bad about having to leave a free country in order to go work in the U.S. or that didn't plan on coming back to MX just as fast as they could.

You'll do much better then the Dominican Republic I assure you.

It would be smart to stay on the tourist "drags". The police are there in large numbers.And they severely punish anyone messing with their tourists.(99%) Beautiful area!!! Don't forget to go diving!!!

Of course you should get out and about into the 'real' country, but don't expect everything to be just like home in terms of fixed taxi fares and visible pricing. Learn to bargain calmly and if you don't like the price you are quoted, then politely walk away. Learn the basics of the language, especially numbers, before you go.... and have fun!

No, it's not safe. Mexico is a cesspool of filth and corruption. Why do you think the mexicans are all scampering like rats into the US?
