I from london and my girfreind is croatian . We are thinking of renting a Villa in Crete for this summer. But we have heard and read testimonial of how there is applalling racist behavoiur towards people of colour. I like a frank answer as i love the greek culture but do not wont to be disappointed when i get there. May i underline that i do or never will think all greek are rascist. But it is a concern. Any help truly appreciated.

  1. If I were you, I would go to the Croatian coast, its beautiful!!!

I saw (honestly) a black girl being in a fight with two white Greek girls in front of a club in Corfu (sorry if i misspelled the name if the island.

I cant tell you for sure was it a racial thing :) But it sure looked like that.

I am going to Turkey this July, its even more fantastic there :):) I have been there so many times, and the people, and their hospitality amazes me...

But Croatians are good people too...

  2. You won't have any problems. People will stare at the most.

Can you give us some links with these stories you have read?

  3. I can only promise you that if you are not treated nicely, you can contact me and I'll be glad to offer you free stay for a week anywhere you like along with my apologies.

I've never heard of racist acts in Greece but I know that in a couple of isolated villages up on the mountains of Crete, locals  don't like strangers, Greek or foreigners.

I can also recall that locals in the city of Chania in Crete, have had problems with Americans from the NATO base there because of their bully behavior when they get drunk.

You should be more afraid of men making a move on your girlfriend. Croatian women are beautiful! Enjoy your stay

  4. Greeks tend to stare - it's not often meant in a bad way - they are just a curious nation and STARE! Having lived here 20 yrs I find myself staring too! I have told this story before on here - a few weeks ago I was in Parga - and there were some tourists drinking cocktails and I was thinking 'Jeez what an awful looking green cocktail - wonder if it tastes as bad as it looks' I didn't even realise I was staring until the tourist asked 'what's your problem!?' So I am also guilty of staring!!!! My neices are mixed race (from UK) one cannot take the staring (her personality is a little strange) the youngest has no problems - it's mostly harmless and you should never take offence (as people do in UK) stare back - works for me! Have a great time!

c.starling - I doubt the girls who were fighting were Greek girls - Greeks rarely fight and Greek girls (in my experience) can't fight so I would be very surprised if they were Greeks - more likely tourists (and ashamed to say - more likely all 3 were British)

  5. Hmmm, interesting statement. May I ask you to provide us with links to the sites you read such stories?

It wasn't "people" magazine by any chance, was it?

  6. Both in the mainland of Greece and in the islands there are no racist behaviours and acts. Especially in Crete which is a famous touristic place. And personally l don't like discriminations in races and in skin colour. Many people, no matter the colour of their skin visit Greece and have a great time

  7. yes is is safe.

Asimenia is right,Greeks use to stare something is not usual here.....

Maybe stare you in a special point of your body because as you said you are blackman --hehe  you got my point ;)--

no you ll have no problem Crete specially is a very touristic places and are very familiar with all kind of tourists.

  8. Iy's simple. Act badly, and you will be treated badly. Act nicely and you will be treated nicely.
