Is it safe to have a wisdom tooth out during pregnancy?

Hi I am 10 weeks pregnant and I am also a high risk pregnancy. I had an appointment to get my wisdom tooth out but on the day I was supposed to I found out I was pregnant so the dentist refused to take it out and now my tooth is severely infected and is causing me so much pain I don't know what to do. I see my ob next week but I don't know how much longer I can put up with the pain for.

Please help if you have had a similar experience.

  1. Some dentists will do it, some will not. I personally would not do it. I have a toothache right now actually, and I know it might be just a cavity filling that fell out. Otherwise, it is my wisdom teeth coming in. I was told I would have them out by the time I turned 18, but I've been at the dentist so many times since then and not a word was said. You really should wait. It's not safe to go under any anesthesia while pregnant. Go to the emergency room, they will probably prescribe you pain killers that are safe during pregnancy. Just make sure you mention that you are pregnant.

Especially if you are high-risk, you don't want to miss with it. However, if the pain is that unbearable, you need to do something. See what else the dentist or the ER will do. The ER will also prescribe you antibiotics like they did me, they do for everyone. & they are perfectly safe to take during pregnancy, and will stop any infections from spreading which is also VERY unsafe for you & baby.

    Good luck!

  2. You will need to get the OK from your doctor, especially with you being high risk and you are probably going to have to wait until you are further along. The dentist likes to xray your mouth before removing a widsom tooth but you cant get an xray safely until you further along.

I had a cracked wisdom tooth on each side of my mouth (both on top) and I had to wait until I was 16 weeks to get them removed. They hurt so bad. The only thing you can take is tylenol unless your doctor prescribes you something else.

A tip an RN gave me: Take an asprin pill. Get it wet enough to crush it up. Take a cotton ball and soak it in the asprin then place the cotton all where your tooth is. This helps to numb it so the pain goes away. Do not swallow the asprin though. What I did it let it sit against my tooth and then I would spit before I would swallow so I wouldnt swallow any of the asprin at all.

Avoid salty foods. And brush your teeth after you eat anything!

Call your doctor and explain your situation. This is treated as an emergency because it's not good to have bad teeth, especially infected, while you're pregnant. You need to get it pulled or get something for you to take while pregnant. It will only get worse.

If it gets unbearable this weekend, go to the hospital. I almost did that a couple of times.

  3. Yeah, i had to have mine out at 7 months, you will need clearance from your OB but it should be no problem, i am not sure but i dont think they will actually sedate you, just numb you really good, its not too bad! Take care and GOD BLESS!!!
