Question:

Is it safe to have s*x after 3 days of taking birth control pills at the start of my period?

I started my period this week, and started taking my birth control pills on the first day. After 3 days, I had sexual intercourse. I read somewhere that it was safe, because birth control pills take effect right away when taken at the start of your period. However, I would just like to be safe. Should I take emergency contraception pills?

  1. You're perfectly safe as long as you took your first pill within 24 hours of the beginning of your period. All the pill does is basically stop an egg from passing from the ovaries, through the fallopian tubes and into the uterus for conception. The egg hangs out there until a sperm meets up with it and, if there's no interaction, it dies and exits the body via your monthly gift. Taking the pill at the beginning of your period when the egg is being flushed out means that there won't be an egg waiting around for sperm. If you start taking your pills any other time, (some women are "Sunday Starters" meaning they start the first Sunday of their period), you aren't protected right away because the egg might have already planted itself along the uterus.

    Take care!

  2. Use a condom. Play safe and you should be fine!

  3. There's no need to take emergency contraception.  You are protected immediately if you started the pill on day one of your period.  If you start taking the pill within the first five days of your cycle (the first day of your period is day 1), you are protected IMMEDIATELY. If you start at any other point in your cycle, you are protected after seven days of active pills. According to Planned Parenthood:

"If you start the combination pill within five days after the start of your period, take the first active pill of the first pack. You will not need to use a back up method of birth control. You are protected against pregnancy immediately.

If you start the combination pill at any other time during your menstrual cycle, take the first active pill of the first pack. Use another method of birth control if you have vaginal intercourse during the first week of combination pill use — protection will begin after seven days."
