Question:

Is it safe to house guinea pigs with birds?

My mum suggested if we get guinea pigs we should also get a big aviary

with birds and house them together.

I told her the guinea pigs can get sick from it, and she told me a few of her friends have done it.

I'm against it, but I just want to know if you can or can't?

Thanks for your time (:

  1. the birds droppings get on the guinea pigs body... that will make them sick more frequently..

but it seems like a wierd idea

  2. I don't know why you couldn't, except that the guinea pigs would get bird droppings on them and have to be bathed more frequently. I've never heard of doing it though.

Cross-species illnesses are rare in nature. Guinea pigs in nature lived with birds.

Of course, you'd have to keep it clean from the bird and guinea pig droppings. The bird food would have to be kept out of reach of the guinea pigs.

See guineapigsclub.com for more information on guinea pigs.

  3. Uh most likeyly you cant. the guinea pig can get sick and so does your birds can get sick. also if you think of doing an outside aviary dont even think about getting a guinea pig.

  4. No, the guinea pigs will get sick from the bird p**p and they can catch diseases from the birds. The birds may hurt the guinea pigs too.

And they have different dietary needs http://www.guinealynx.info/

  5. Hmm. Guinea pigs are very fragile and sensitive animals, and birds would probably hurt the guinea pig (i know that sounds weird). The same as a hamster can kill a guinea pig. But I'm not telling you not to do this, I just wouldn't recommend it. If you're having trouble deciding what to do, just contact a vet and ask her if it's ok to do this. :]

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

  6. the only thing I have to say is...DON'T DO IT!!!!! ONE OF THEM WILL DIE!!!! they're two animals that do not belong together!

  7. yea let me jst tell yuh sumthin...

never put rats nd birds together....

    been there done that...

my rats ran away nd they were in my room hiding...

nd my birds came out of te cage (cuz the space between bars are big)

nd on that day i broke my arm nd when i came home, my birds were missing nd it smeeled roten in my room...

so i opened my bed, nd my birds necks were broken, nd they were eaten out.... ='(

    i miss my birds..

  8. It's always a bad idea to house two different species together. So, no, I wouldn't recommend this at all.
