Or will birds try to eat her? She is approximately 5-6 inches...Are there dangers in keeping her outside, or will she be safe?

  1. Unfortunately there are dangers no matter where you keep her. If you let her roam your house she may get lost or squished. If you keep her outside predators may try to eat her, whether or not they actually do is a different story, but the act of trying may have her carried off somewhere or hurt. There is also the risk of her getting stolen. People these are daring and I have heard of many turtles and even 60 pound tortoises getting stolen out of backyards. Either way there are risks, so you may have to decide what is riskier. I don't know where you live or what kind of neighbors you have, but just remember that some people are nuts these days and do crazy things that others wouldn't even dream up.  Good luck either way!  I hope it all works out for you!

Sliders, Cooters , painted ,map and yellow bellied are require the same care and feeding.

I have two sliders that are 36 yrs old!! Plus an 8 and 5 yr old.

I have had them in a pond for about 6 yrs now..and they love it. With all the fish to swim after and eat and get their exercise also and bask in the sun alll day!!

When I had them in a kiddy pool I had to construct a

t-pee like thinng out of chicken wire to put over it during the day and night cause of birds of prey and raccoons. We have had some hawks come by and ravens once in a while but we have a dog and cats and they hang by the pond waiy and hopin for someone to chase even a hawk! So we are safe now. plus I have alot of plants around it.

Remember he loves fish so stock the pond with feeder goldfish and toss in leafy greens like romaine or butter lettuce 3  plus times a week!  Enjoy

  4. Keeping them in a pond is completely fine, just make sure to put at least a small fence around it (depending on the surrounding area) to keep them from wandering too far. You might also need to keep local animals out, depending on where you live. Dogs, cats, raccoons, and in some places carnivorous birds all pose possible threats. You can help by putting plenty of rocks and other forms of shelter around the pond, maybe a log. These things also make your pond look much more natural!
