Is it safe to leave your car on while filling the gas tank?

I have frequently stopped at a gas station to fill up and have found that on several occasions, other motorists do not turn off their vehicles while they're filling up their tank. Is this actually safe to do?

  1. Is that really a chance you want to take?..Igniting your car, probably the gas station and maybe a couple of other cars there as well?...Look at the ground next time you fill up...It's covered with oily residue which is very flammable...Refueling with the engine running ranks up there with smoking while refueling...That's why there are signs around the station that tell us to turn off the engine and no smoking.

  2. your not suppose to keep your vehicle running while filling up your tank. while it's pretty safe to do there is still a 1 in 1,000,000 chance that a spark can ignite and catch fire but i doubt it will ever happen.

  3. HECK NO!and its bad 2 tlk on the phone while doing that to

  4. 99.999% chence you wont cause a explosion, but opening your fuel cap with the engine running can effect your vehicles emissions system.

  5. No it can blow up

  6. Watch this:

  7. It is perfectly safe to fuel while your car is running don't listen to these other answers. The problem is they want you to shut off the engine because some people are bone heads and keep there car running and forget they are fueling. They forget that they are not done and drive off with the hose attached! If they make you shut off your car your more likely to not start the car again until you are done fueling thus not taking off with the hose still attached to your car!!! I mean really think about it how would it cause an explosion? Some of the answers on here amaze me

  8. you can leave it on but not to the point where your starting the engine..

  9. Your engine can create a spark from under the hood and the gas vapors could catch on fire, so dont do this at all..................

  10. No

There are various kinds of dangers, that could lead to a fire that kills everyone at the gas station.

You should report those people to an employee of the gas station or convenience store.  If the store takes no action, then you should take your business to a different place.

  11. No, it is not safe to do. It is actually a stupid thing to do!

  12. dont do it

  13. It potentially could cause a fire or explosion.   I believe some states have laws that state that you must turn off the engine.....irregardless, I turn off my car just to be safe.
