Is it safe to move to phoenix, AZ?

Can any who has lived in or around the Phoenix area tell me if it is a good idea to move there? My friend(who has lived there) tells me it is very dangerous for a woman to be by herself there. Is that true? Now I understand with bigger cities comes bigger crime rates but I just don't want to regret moving there.

What is the social scene like? Are people friendly? Are there many different social groups? I'm not trying to sound like a dumb but I'm just trying to get my research in.

I also hear there are alot of stoners there. Do they like overpopulate or anything? Not like I'm a goody goody or anything, I mean I've had my share of 420 just not into it anymore , moved onto other things. No offense to you if you are one just wanna make sure I can meet alot of people who are into other things.

Please, elaborate if you answer this. I wanna know anything u can tell me, good or bad. And if it is that bad, please spare me the trip. Thank you.

  1. I wouldn't recommend anyone moving to phoenix.  I love it up here in Prescott, az, about a 100 miles north.  great night life, safe, lots of bars, a great minor ice hockey team and arena, I know, you don't do hockey, but its soooooooooooo fun and crazy.  only thing i miss that arent in big cities are strip joints and swig clubs or even adult novelty stores, but email me if ya wanna know anything else.

  2. Yes! Phoenix is perfectly safe. Just like you said, big cities tend to have more crime. There's a few surrounding cities that have been considered safest cities in America. Phoenix is laid out kind of weird because you can be in a neighborhood with million dollar homes, drive a couple of blocks, and you're in a trailer park. Scottsdale (or snobsdale like some people call it) is where the rich live and play. If you are looking for more diversity, Tempe is the place. It's home to ASU, so you have people from all over the world living there, and Mill Ave has all the bars, shops and restaurants. Tempe Market place is a good hang out place to. As for stoners, I guess most of them are in the North Phoenix area. The majority of Hispanics and Blacks live in South and West Phoenix, and the East Valley is pretty mixed. The SouthWest areas like Peoria and Glendale have less minorites, but too many Christians.  If you get bored here, you are doing something wrong, or you're not really looking. Glendale and Peoria have a few areas with entertainment, but for younger single people, Tempe and Scottsdale are the spots to hang out in.

  3. i lived in phx for almost a year..my apartment was broken into while i was at work and i had my car broken into twice..i hated it..hated the police helicopters all the time..maybe i lived in a "bad" area but ppl out there just seemed to accept that way of living....i remember when i bought a brand new car..my brother asked if i got a gun to go with it..it was nothing to see ppl with guns tucked in their back pocket or waist bands..no holsters, just guns...i cant remember how many dead bodies i saw on the sides of the road..that was something i just couldnt get used to...and i lived in Tucson too..didnt feel that was much better...i remember looking for an apt when i first moved there..my niece went with me, she's lived in PHX for  years..her house has been broken into more than once...even with an alarm....but back to the apt...after i parked my car at one location i started walking to the office...i saw a lot of blood on the stairs leading upstairs..i immediately left..found out later someone was murdered the night before..it was nice to swim all year long and i loved Encanto Park off 19th and Thomas..when i moved there i was told it was recently "taken back from the gangs"..what a lovely thot...i worked at ASU and knew a bunch of different ppl from all over PHX and everyone i met had their share of trouble...after my apt was burglarized, i moved within the next few days...out of the state..completely..

  4. The place you live is what you want it to be.  This city is so-o-o-o large that what ever you are looking for is here, you just have to look for it.  Every large city has its BAD areas.  Not knowing what your age, occupation or income level is makes it hard to make suggestions.  Once you get here I would tell you to drive around and see how different areas feel and look to you.  There are so many variables in choosing a place to live.  There are no more druggies or criminals here than anywhere else. They have their neighborhoods and everyone else has theirs. You can tell the difference. It all boils down to what kind of life you want.  They say 'You are who your friends are', so, we choose our friends wisely and build our lives slowly. Are you moving here because you have friends here?  Talk to them and ask questions.  They can help you make up your mind.
