  2. you might die, it depend on the liquid

  3. The liquid is very acidic.  Don't play with batteries like this!

  4. no, there are chemicals that can really hurt

  5. call poison control

that was probably battery acid....very dangerous

  6. probably not. battery acid can burn through your skin.

atleast thats what i heard. that's why you aren't supposed to open batteries.

  7. That Would Be Battery Acid.  It Can Be VERY Dangerous.  Just Wash Your Hands Well And You Should Be Ok....But Dont Open Or Touch Anymore Of The Insides Of Batteries.

  8. call poison control immediately.  It isn't at all safe to open a battery because of all the chemicals and acids inside of it, tomorrow go to a dermatologist to check out the spot where it itches and ask her for suggestive lotions to put on it.

  9. it  was not a smart move, but you should wash the area with cold water.

    Neutralize with baking soda.

Alkaline batteries DO NOT CONTAIN sulphic acid like a wet cell would contain, but it is an alkaline and you should clean up the mess with cold water and a soap, but do not use soap on flesh, just cold water.

If you continue to have problems, call the poison control center.

  10. It's quite doable but i wouldn't recommend opening any type of battery.

  11. No, it is probably not safe to open batteries.  However, just wash your hands and stop playing with batteries.  It's probably not "acid" because alkaline batteries use potassium hydroxide which is actually a base.  You'll be fine.

  12. I would not advise it............

  13. NO!!! That liquid is acid. acid is put in batteries because of its electric and acidic state. Because of its corrosive qualities it is used as a raw power in batteries. See a docter immediately if it is red, irritated, ichy, burned, or anything unuasal as it can become a very big problem. Or just try looking on www.webmd.com for resources.

    Good luck with that...

  14. Pretty dumb idea.  It may burn you, and it may not, but no telling what was absorbed through the skin that you won't even know about for a while.

There's a reason you're not supposed to do that.

  15. If you quickly washed your hands you will be fine. You didn't tell us but I bet you did. Don't let all the mommies scare you.  You are not going to die and you don't need to run to the dermatologist.  The liquid in the battery is not an acid it is a base.  It will burn you if you leave it on your skin.  That's what caused the "itching".  Now go throw away the battery then wash your hands again.

It is only through god's good grace that we survived our youth.

Good luck and 73 from the Fisherman

  16. Yes, just make sure it does not splat in your eyes, contents are under pressure, and use gloves because the contents are acidic, not crazy corrosive but mildly irritating. Stop freaking scaring the kid most of your answers are exaggerated the PH level of battery acid is not at a corrosive level, it will only irritate for a while.

  17. There is no real danger in opening up an alkaline battery.  As someone else pointed out, one of the chemicals is a base, not an acid.  There is nothing that is considered toxic in a standard battery.  They can be disposed of in normal household garbage.  Some of the rechargeable batteries do have a toxic substance in them.  NiCad, or nickle-cadmium batteries have cadmium in them.  This is toxic but won't be very dangerous on a short term exposure to your skin.  I'm sure you've washed everything off by now.  And don't let this discourage you from finding out how things work.  Taking things apart can be a fun learning process.  But please ask about things before you take them apart.  Some things do have dangerous chemicals in them.  It would be best to ask a science teacher or somebody that would really know.  You got a lot of answers here that were well intended but misinformed.

  18. meh prolly a bit of acid.. aint too bad.. when  i was 10 i used to crack batteries all the time when  i was bored.. lolz didnt  kill me..

  19. It's not acid.  It is an alkaline substance inside the battery that helps produce electricity.  It will eat through a lot of things including skin.  Don't mess with batteries.  You won't die from the bit that got on your finger but I bet you won't do that again.  Don't.
