However, keep in mind that a lot of stores do not accept credit cards for purchases below a certain value with Rs.200 being the minimum purchase amount for a card payment. Also, for the large value purchases, some stores tend to charge you a card processing fee of between 1.5% to 2% of the purchase amount.

Besides this, keep a debit card or cash handy because auto rickshaws and taxis do not accept cards at all.

It is safe, however I will use a lower limit card and only use at bigger, reputable stores. For smaller stores and day to day shopping  use cash and keep receipts.
