Is it safe to put metal in a hermit crab's habitat?

I have three hermies, and I am trying to put various things in their habitat that they can climb on. I have this metal rimmed and metal mesh lid that fits perfectly as a divider that they can also climb and hang on, but want to know if it is safe to use. Thanks

No hermit crabs and metal do not mix. The animals do not react well to it. and the rust can cause problems.

Try netting and suction cups or fake vines or a plastic version for them to climb on. Mine LOV their netting.

i don't believe metal would do any harm . the hermit crab tank i used to have was all metal mesh things. its great for them to exercise and climb on.

Most metals can and do rust (especially since we offer both fresh and salt water to crabs); and this can hurt the hermit crabs, because they will eat anything and everything.  You would be better off getting some untreated wood and building (or carving) your own climbing apparatus.  Some people like the fisherman's netting; but I have heard from many other crabbers that crabs can get caught in the netting and stuck; some crabs have died as a result.  Rule of thumb; never put anything into the tank that has an opening smaller than (or as big as) your smallest hermit crab.  You can also check the aquatics section of the pet stores for aquarium decorations; just be sure to take off the plastic plants (if any), because these can also be harmful to the hermit crabs.

because of the humidity and salt it will probably rust and contaminate the tank. Get some pieces of driftwood, plastic containers with holes cut in and plastic plants for aquariums, these are the safest. Remember too hermit crabs have very strong claws and love to shred things so make sure whatever you put in there is heavy duty and the lid on the tank is on very tight!
