  1. I would put them on a diet slowly, like, incorporate the new food into the food they have now, so they don't get sick. If you change a cat's diet to fast, they can end up in the vet's for several days.

  2. Slowly.  Any change in a cat's diet should be made slowly.

You can just decrease the amount of food they're eating a little at a time.  Switching to a higher quality food, if you haven't already, should also help.  My girl has been packing on the weight since she got spayed and one boy is obese so we've been slowly transitioning the whole group to Innova Evo: http://www.naturapet.com/brands/evo.asp To help everyone maintain a proper weight.  Commercial foods contain lots of grains and corn, which are empty calories for kitties, in spite of what some labels claim.

High quality wet food is great.  I would keep up with at least the same amount of that and just decrease the dry food.  Even the highest quality dry food needs some unhealthy ingredients to hold it together and keep it from spoiling. And the idea that hard food is good for teeth has no proof, so don't worry about that.

My kitties were confused by Evo at first but it's well loved already.  The obese kitty has been sick recently and couldn't hold down regular cat food, now with his medicine and a combination of plain baby food and Evo, he seems to finally be improving.

    Good luck!
