  1. Yes, as long as it is grounded. But it is best if you have a window unit, buy a surge protector, that way if you have a surge of electricity it will not burn out the air conditioners.Same with computers, TV's And vidio games. Make sure it says surge protector on it before you buy. They cost a little more, but they are worth it. A central unit when put in by a pro, he has to by law ground it.

  2. If the electricity goes out it will short cycle a compressor.

I have replaced many compressors because of this. They rely on an equalization of the pressures to be able to start and when short cycled it is hard on them. Not to mention the start components.

Continue to do exactly what you are doing.

  3. its self answered and you know this one you know to turn off power in side you house in bad weather for it may cause you problems later.later,R W Jones here.?

  4. yes , what makes you think its unsafe to do so?

  5. HVAC Tech.: I have made a mint from people who leave the unit on during electrical storms. Electrical boards get knocked out, But the big item is the compressors. Those little short power outages where the power comes right back on can kill a compressor. It is trying to restart against full head pressure. It don't know it can't so it just keeps on trying till it burns something out, usually itself. If lighting hits the power lines it FRIES every thing that is turned on. Save money turn them (freezer icebox)OFF till the Thunder is gone.
