The 1988 Seoul Olympics featured flagrant cheating by host country judges on behalf of native athletes, and ought to have made clear the undesirable problems associated with trying to conduct fair competitions under the authority of representatives of non-European cultures where the rule of objective law is unknown and in which “face” is valued far above integrity.

  1. I am inclined to agree with you.

  2. I don't remember ever hearing that said about the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

I do remember that North Korea boycotted the Games because they were not considered co-hosts.

They failed to realise that countries don't host Olympic Games cities do.

  3. Yes, it does. I was at the games in Korea. I saw saw much cheating in boxing for Korea that it was a shame.

  4. Absolutely not!  Moscow 1980.

It was David and Goliath - the free West versus the professional machinery of the Soviet Bloc. We, the West, had little chance against nations that made their Olympic Athletes de facto professionals and pioneered steroids and s*x change operations JUST to win at the Olympics.  So while East Bloc, especially Soviet, athletes lived a life of comparative luxury, able to dedicate ALL their time to the athletic prowess (like Michael Phelps, now), American athletes (and those of our rules-abiding allies) had to hold down a job to support themselves, got no money from the USOC and certainly no endorsements lest they become disqualified.  Bruce Jenner ended his Olympic career by taking some paltry sum of money to be on a Wheaties box.

No, it was Moscow.  And, oh, by the way, the US (Carter) was ABSOLUTELY wrong to have boycotted it...

Killy Gonso, how do you figure the US ruined the Olympics..?  That seems like an irrational lashing out.  Professional athletes "ruined" the amateur status.

And, folks, remember that the home team ALWAYS has a home field advantage because they test and train at the venues and ALL judging (gymnastics, skating, boxing, etc) favors the home crowd.  Always has (I’ve watched since '72) and always will...

  5. Thats just a bunch of B.S.!

  6. yes Seoul had some funny decisions, but 1980 in Moscow and 1984 in Los Angeles were instances where the host nations gave preferences to their own.  Both were boycotted and the hosts tried to make themselves look great.

  7. what? no 1988 seoul olympic is known as most successful olympic in history. Coreans didn't cheat in anything that's your own opinion. Americans cheat alot in 1988 seoul olympic. America is the one that ruin the olympic. but, other than that, people remember seoul olympic as most successful olympic in history. google it.................

  8. Who cares?  And what is your agenda for bringing up unsubstantiated charges?
