Question:

Is it safe to sleep in a car?

If I were to spend a night in my car, would it be safe? Do I need to crack open my windows a bit, or buy an air conditioning kit? What if I did it every night for a couple of weeks? Comments from people who have already done this would be the best.

  1. You will not be in any trouble from the car or from lack of oxygen,  but from humans who are out prowling around.

In my life I have slept many nights in different cars.  Lock your doors....  Be aware of the environment the car is in.

  2. Its cool.. crack your windows a bit..but a cheap buddy of mine spent four years going to CU boulder in CO living in his van....it can be done.

  3. i've been on plenty of road trips.

if its not cold, crack the window a bit.

go to a koa campground. ask for the overflow area.

pay a few bucks, and you'll get access to the showers there, its a cool deal.

walmart is very hospitable towards overnighters.

good luck and be prepared to have the cops asking questions.

so you better not be (holding) ya dig.

  4. Open your windows just a bit...I'm sure you will be okay for one night...two at the most. Don't let anyone know you sleep in your car...

  5. You might get attacked if you're in a bad neighbor but you'll save on rent! I've actually considered that too hahaha I start an internship in July and I have nowhere to stay. Never done it though so I'm not really much help.

  6. During sleeping, Don't open air conditioner with closed windows. Instead, you can open windows with a/c and sleep but it is still not safe because may be somebody can rob you during sleeping.

  7. y would u want 2 spend a night in a car???

anyway it depends where u r going 2 sleep?

if ur in a part of the world where u r surrounded by gangs i suggest not 2 but if u want 2 go somewhere like the country side lock the doors and ud be fine.

  8. open the window( just a crack) so you can get clean air. it also depends on the neighborhood where you are sleeping.

  9. Nopee, maybe for one night! or VERY occasionly, like sofabeds; you shouldnt sleep on them every night but you get get away with it once in a while. and it depends on what car you got! if you got a old mini then i suggest not, if you got a hummer truck or a limo then why not haha!

  10. I WOULDN'T SUGGEST IT

  11. What are you talking about in regards to safety? In a big city, it would be stupid. But, if it's in a small town, it should be fine. I do it quite often. Love it, it's my own space.

You don't need to crack the window open, but it helps if you aren't comfortable with the temperature inside. It's not dangerous, is what I'm saying.

  12. as long as you bundle up and listen to the radio. maybe a little otto von schirach.

  13. i have spent many nights in a car, the only concern you would have would be if you have it running especially inside an inclosed area. Other than that there should be no worries about safety except the area you are in.

  14. no not really , i have driven to Flordia and i live pretty far from there, so you should worry bout the weather though, if it is cold where you are then it is not safe you could die if it is freezing so bring extra blankets and heavy clothing.

  15. Cars are not airtight. You will not suffocate. To answer your question, it depends on where the car is. You wouldn't want to be pulled over on the shoulder of a freeway trying to sleep in your car.

I've slept in my car at rest areas before. Too tired to keep driving, pull into a rest area and sleep for a couple of hours, then back on the highway, refreshed.

  16. be a bit cold

  17. h**l NO

  18. KEEP UR DOORS LOCKED THIS DAY AND TIME YOU NEVER KNOW BUT I KNOW A FEW PEOPLE WHO SLEEP IN THERE CAR WHILE THEY WERE AWAY WORKING JUST BE CAREFUL AND SAFE!

  19. no, it is so wrong to close all the windows while you sleep.. you need at least little air. and another nope, it is so unsafe to sleep in the car.

  20. well, you can crack a small window open for ventilation; obviously there is comfort/discomfort issue depending on the size of the car (mini van vs. small car) etc...the key is to find a good secure place to park where you would have privacy...last time i took a nap in my car someone thought I was dead and the emergency unit arrived along with police which was very embarassing to say the least. lol

  21. No, someone could try to attack you.

  22. no.

  23. I don't understand why some of the other answers said no, but I've done it and it's fine.  When I was in high school, I friend and myself when to a party that got broken up by the cops.  We bailed, but had no where to go since we told our parents we were staying at each others house that night.  We ended up parking at a park an ride on the side of the freeway.  We froze our butts off since it was winter, but we had the windows up.  Don't worry, you're not a dog, you can tell if the air is getting thin, but cars are not air tight.  Just don't leave your car running under any kind of overpass or covering as the exhust from the car will circulate back into the car and cause carbon monoxide poisening.  This I know because I couple at my high school died from this.  They stayed the night in their car under an over pass and left the car running so they would have heat.  They were found the next day after passing in their sleep.  Also be careful where you park your car if you are sleeping in it.  It's not "safe" if it's in an "unsafe" neighborhood.  Lastly, my husband has a friend that chooses to be homeless (works and all, but lives in her van).  She sleeps in there every night, except the occational nights she comes to hang out with us.

Hope that helps...Good luck, and God Bless!

  24. yes but question is(repharsed) where is it ok  to sleep in a car ? well surley not a forest.

  25. Do not do it.  I spent a few nights in my car, and it's not fun.  Uncomfortable to start.  I woke up often.  I was constantly worrying someone would see me/scare me/break in. Ah, bad idea.

  26. It is safe to sleep in a car. But, it is unwise to do so as you are putting yourself in danger of being attacked/robbed etc. I find it strange anyone without a death wish would ask this question......

  27. well from personal experience, it's not comfortable and going pee in the middle of the night is a problem for a girl! but you know, you've got to do what you've got to do!

  28. yeah you'll be fine just park in a safe place.

  29. If you're in a rough neighborhood, no.

Otherwise, yes it's fine. And yes, crack the windows just a tiny bit for ventilation, not that you can't breathe, but because your breath will cause moisture buildup on the windows in a closed car, and if you do this for a couple weeks, you can get a mold problem and sinus problems.  You don't need any kits.. just be sure to lock the doors.

  30. Yes, do crack the windows a bit.  Bigger question is where are you going to be parked?   If it's in a safe part of town, you should be okay.

I had to live out of my Van for a few months (money problems) and I was okay.

  31. I would say its fairly safe.  Just stay in a lighted area.

I slept in my car in Safeway and Albertsons parkinglots a few times in a very dangerous city (Tacoma, WA) and I did this over a period of 2 weeks.

I just hung some shirts to cover the windows, laid a blanket over the head rests of the front seats to block people from looking in the windshield, and stuck some shirts in the back window.  This was in a 93 civic 4dr too.  It was a little cold but I had blankets.

Only thing that scared me was a street sweeper at 2am.
