Hello! I own a 1997 Firebird Formula with the 5.7L LT-1 engine, no ram air package. Less than 70K miles.

Questions - Is it safe for the engine to add a supercharger?

If so, do you recommend any specific make?

About how much money are we talking to have a mechanic drop in the supercharger and install a boost gauge? Thanks for your answers!

  1. around 4 grand to install I like paxton, vortec but concider going turbocharged as well. they can regulate the boost gain a lot of power and it does't rob power to make power. if driving easy the turbo just barely runs and the engine feels pretty close to stock, but set her to the floor and hold on tight your in for a ride.

  2. If you're going to put a supercharger on it, I would suggest getting it rebuilt first. With the extra pressure being forced into the cylinders, you need to have heavier valves, springs, cam shaft, pistons, rings, con rods and bearings. The added stress will also effect your crankshaft and main bearings. That's why I suggested the rebuild. If you do get it done, make sure there's a blow out plate installed to vent the pressure just in case something inside decides not to like your new attachment. That part of it will cost at least $1,000. The blower, intake and carbs will set you back about the same if not more. With the added boost all that torque has to go somewhere, you'll need a heavier transmission, drive shaft and gears in the differential. Now you're up to about $3,000. You also have to stiffen the frame to handle the stress, Another $1000 easy. What comes in must go out, so, you'll need a new set of free flowing headers, dual exhausts and mufflers. All told figure about $6,000, if you're lucky.
