Is it safe to take Miralax longer than a year?

My 12 year old son was diagnosed with "behavioral constipation" over four years ago and was prescribed Miralax. He has now been on it for four years. I am afraid that his body will become dependent on the Miralax and wonder if he even needs it at all.
