Question:

Is it safe to take my boys to a Red Wings Cup final game at the Joe Louis Arena?

I was thinking of taking my boys (ages 8 and 6) to a Red Wings game at the Joe Louis Arena (game 6 of the Stanely Cup finals). I'm from Ontario and never been to Detroit. Would it be safe to take my boys if the game is at night? Where should I park? How do I get to the arena from Windsor? If it's not safe for kids then I would just go with a couple of my buddies. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. take the tunnel  left on jefferson,  park in he joe louis arena garage. down town is safe a lot of people and police, and a lot of media will be out there  so welcome to mich and go wings

  2. Good Grief........... Take the Kids to the game I haven't heard of anyone getting killed at the Joe!!  We took our kids and we all came away with our lives!!!!!!!!!! and a WIN Go have fun!!!

  3. Go with your buddies...Not saying it isn't safe...But you could always take the boyz up to Toronto next year for a Stanley Cup final game.

** figured there would be at least one out there that doesn't understand tongue in cheek humour. (Leafs in finals)

**** Further to your question....are you sure Game 6 is at the Joe?? I think they'll be on the road for a game 6 if there is one.

  4. I'm hoping we won't need a game 6 for this series, but if we do, I have taken my kids along to games on several occasions - mine are 10 and 13.

The area of town where the Joe is located is very close to the tunnel from Canada (Windsor), and is mostly concrete.  There are several places to park - we often use the COBO center car park as it gives you a warm place to walk through.  There are usually plenty of people around and you won't see some of the disreputable parts of town.  There will be people asking for or trying to sell spare tickets, but you can just ignore them.

I've never seen bad behaviour in the crowd, though the language could in theory get a bit colourful!

I'll try to update this with mapquest refs in a minute

    Here is one:  http://www.mapquest.com/maps/COBO+center...

    And here's another:  http://www.mapquest.com/maps/joe+louis+a...

  5. Its safe to take your boys to the game.  I've taken my nephews to games at the JLA during the day and at night.  As stated above, you can just take the Windsor tunnel to Jefferson and park at the Joe Louis Arena garage, on the roof at Cobo Center, or there are several lots near the arena where you can find parking.  If you can head down a couple hours early, you can also head over to the Hockeytown Cafe for dinner on Woodward Ave. near Comerica Park.  There is a parking garage adjacent to it and they have a free shuttle to Joe Louis Arena.  Just check whether the Tigers are playing that night as well since it will be full if so.

Just a side note, game 6 would be in Pittsburgh or Philly.  Games 1,2,5,7 are in Detroit.

  6. use directions on google maps a lot better than mapquest, i don't if it's safe or not so really hang on to your kids, use superglue, handcuffs, whatever

  7. Yeah its safe...Its not in a very bad part of town. I have been to several games with my parents and I just went to game 2 of the conference finals with just me (im 18) and two of my buddies, so I would say you are okay.

  8. What Toronto in the finals? There's a dream.

It's not a war zone.  Lots of parents bring their kids.  I was there for game 1 and it was full of families.  Take the kids, they will love it.

Use mapquest for directions if you need them.

  9. Its safe. I take my grandson all the time. The boys will love it.

  10. Do you mean game 5? Beer Slayer is right - if there is a game 6, it will be in Dallas. If you have the opportunity GO! You and your kids will love it.
