  1. i don't think it is safe.. so better be careful..

Because lightning could hit the phone line and travel though the line and zap you though the phone. Some people have died that way.

Portable phones aren't connected to wires, but lightning could still cause a loud "pop" that could hurt your ear.

  2. Usually, yes.

    But sometimes, no.

First of all, it depends on what kind of phone you're using.  If you're using a cell phone, or a wireless phone, and you're inside, you're pretty much safe.  You'd have to be struck directly in order to be hurt by the lightning, and then it wouldn't matter if you were on the phone or not.

The real risk comes when you're using a standard land-line, with a corded handset.  This is because most often, the telephone poles are higher than the other things around them (houses, trees, etc.), and lightning will strike the tallest thing around.  From there, the electricity can pass through the wires, into and through your phone, then into and through your body to the ground.

This is very, very rare, but has happened.  It's best to stay away from things that can include you in the "circuit" that the lightning needs to make it to ground.
