Is it safe to travel from Arequipa to Cusco by bus?

My friends and I are concerned about safety. Flying will cost ~$150.00 versus ~$25 by bus, so the price is very appealing and we are willing to take a 12 hour ride.

  1. I've been from Arequipa to Cuzco by bus several times. The key is to go with a popular bus line. Cruz del Sur, Miraflores, etc. Go ahead and spend the extra $3-$5 for a nice bus. Make sure it has a bathroom on board. If you can, I would suggest "bus cama" seats. These seats are in the bottom of the bus and are like recliners. It is also better temperature controlled.

I personally prefer to take a bus in the late afternoon/early night. That way you can sleep (or at least try to) during your 12 hour trip. There's not much to see between Arequipa and Cuzco. If you go at night, take a light blanket with you...buses are either freezing cold or sweltering hot...there is no in between.

Keep an eye on your personal belongings. Hold on to the ticket that they give you when you give them your bags to put under the bus, you will need it to claim your bags when you arrive. Try and be one of the first people off so that no one else "accidentally" claims your bags.
