Is it safe to travel to Bangkok this week?

I live from the Northern part of Thailand and want to go Bangkok on Thursday. But I overheard my neighbors gossipping that about a million people from all parts of Thailand will be going to Bangkok to join the rally; and it will case huge trafic jams, chaos and commuters might be stranded for days.

Anyone heard about it?

  1. If you do no0t have to be in BKK, do not go. People arereally gathering from everywhere and they mean business. I do not think that travel to and in BKK will be easy this week.

I know Thailand since about 30 years and this one is different.

  2. Yes, it is safe unless you plan to join the PAD. I think they're not very popular at the moment. They cause traffic jam and the stock price going down. These two facts can get most of the Bangkokian (including me) to kill them.

  3. not  a million people, news said about 100 k, no go not even have $100k business deal, understand the prime minister is inside one army camp for safety reason, high chance the situation might turn ugly.

  4. Things don't look good at the moment. If I had a choice between Northern Thailand (I'm not sure if you mean Lanna or Issan that you are in) and being in BKK I'd rather be in Lanna or Issan. It is too early to say how bad it going to be, but I think, at the least, there is going to be a bad feeling in BKK this week. I remember after the last coup a couple of years ago; there was a really bad feeling in the city (I was living there are the time) - not really dangerous but it felt uncomfortable. This time things might be different, PAD seems more extreme than protesters a couple of years ago.

It was interesting what you said about people coming down from the north. 2 years ago road-blocks were set up by the army to stop people coming from Issan to protest. But things are different this time as there has not been a coup by the army (yet). Maybe the government will like it if people come from different provinces to show their support for the government. I worry that things will become violent if different supporters face each other in BKK.

  5. Haven't heard about it.
