  1. Prrrrooobably yeah, it's more about the wear and tear on a rope than the age, but it may have degraded over the time you've stored it, especially if you've kept it in sunlight or damp...

There are people who can check the integrity of your rope, though I'm afraid I don't know any to put you in touch with..

  2. What a lot of people don't seem to understand that polymers will degrade over time, even if it's not being used or exposed to anything.  I never trust any rope more than a few years old, even if still "brand new".

  3. I wouldn't use a rope that old for lead climbing. I have top ropes that old that I still use - but I live in a very dry climate and I keep my ropes in a rope bag in a closet where it is climate controlled. ANY exposure to chemical fumes or sunlight and the rope should be disposed of. Always inspect for sheath and core damage according to manufaturer guidelines. Be safe!

    Good Luck

  4. It doesn't seem like it has had much use, but then...it is old.  The nylon hte rope is made out of will age and weaken with time.

It's probably best to get a new rope.

  5. depends on the storage of your rope.  did you keep it in a bag away from sunlight and solvents?  did you make sure the rope was clean before stowing it?  all these things are important.  If you put a clean rope away in a good storage bag (i.e. a rope bag) and kept it in a dark closet with good climate control, then I would inspect it and if it looks good, then go for it.  if it's frayed, cut, unravelling, or in any other way damaged, scrap it, use it for something else, but don't climb with it.

  6. i would check it out for cuts, fraying, or any other defects if non probably okay

  7. For tying up a hammock, maybe.  Climbing, probably not.  Since your life depends on the rope, I personally wouldn't risk it.  If you decide to use the rope, only use it for toprope but not lead climbing as the stress on the rope is significantly higher during a lead fall.
