Question:

Is it safe to use a UK appliance in Mexico?

I'm going on holiday to Mexico in 8 days and I really need to bring my straighteners. However, I discovered that Mexico plugs are the same as American ones. I know that you can buy plug adaptors, but a friend told me that even if you use an adaptor, you can blow up the house or the appliance because UK voltage is different to Mexican/American. Does anybody know if it is actually safe to use a UK appliance with a Mexican/American plug adaptor?

Many Thanks

  1. The voltage is the same in US and Mexico: 110 (I am Mexican and live since 8 years in Europe).

I work in an hotel in Switzerland (we have in Europe 220), and the machines explodes, if you connect one of 110 (American) to the European 220 plug. To connect a 220 machine to a 110 wont damage your appliance, but it wont work.

  2. Yes. Im from the united states and it works fine for me. Im not sure if it has anything to do with what hotel you stay at though.

  3. No is not safe. Maybe you can buy a straightener in Mexico for a cheap price.

This plug adaptor maybe is secure for laptops but I don´t think for a straightener.

  4. UK voltage is 240 volts and Mexican is 120 volts.

Search the internet for a voltage converter that will step up the 120v to 240v.

Stores the sell luggage will also have these power converters.

    What is a straightener?

  5. Sure it is very safe as it won't work at all. what could be safer?

  6. If the straightner is the only appliance you are going to need here in México I´ll recomend you buy a cheap one at Wal Mart for like 20 bucks. Yes we have Wal Mart.
