Question:

Is it safe to use an adapter on a 2-prong outlet?

Some friends and I are getting a rental property but most of the outlets are only two prong. Being in college, we have tons of electrical equipment and I was just wondering if it is safe to buy a 2 prong to 3 prong adapter and just plug the equipment in that way. Can't really afford fried electronics.

Thank you in advance.

  1. I have used a 3 prong adaptor that had a "pigtail" - a green grounding wire that screws under the center s***w on the outlet plate. That will provide a ground if the junction box for the outlet is grounded. You would want to have that checked.

  2. It's ok to use if you make sure the little wire or the lug is connected to ground. Mot that it's connected to the s***w on the cover plate, but that it's connected and the s***w really is ground.

    Good luck.

  3. the two prong is only utilizing the "hot "& the neutral, you have no physical ground unless you make the connection yourself. the equipment will run , but there is more risk with no ground
