Question:

Is it safe to use my microwave?

I have a microwave that has been in storage for five years. I saw it and it does have a bit of mold on and inside of it. I can clean cutlery or dishes that have such but I am worried that cleaning visible mold on a major appliance like a microwave might not be good enough. Does anyone know if its safe to use this microwave or would I be better off buying a new one?

  1. throw it away and go out and but a new one.

  2. If "eww gross" isn't a factor for you, I imagine you could use it.  Otherwise, why not shell out $30 for a new one?  Microwaves really aren't that expensive.

  3. Yes. Spray the inside and clean er' up, then you put a container of water in there and boil it for a few minutes and that kills the rest. After the steam floats around in there you can do a second wipeout but don't burn yourself. Nuking any type of mold kills it almost immediately so you're good to go. Just make it smell decent.

  4. Wipe down thoroughly with cloth rinsed in hot water, then wipe with vinegar, then wipe with the the cloth again to get rid of the vinegar. To make the microwave smell fresh cut a lemon in half, place it in a bowl with a little water and microwave for a minute or a liitle more depending on the power of you microwave. Be sure to wipe down the insides of the microwave with a cloth afterwards or the acid in the lemon could damage the lining! After all that you should have a fresh-smelling, clean microwave and it's cheaper than buying a new one

  5. I wouldn't use it and would eather just get a new one.

  6. If you don't want to buy a new one, Use vinegar to wipe it out.  Vinegar kills mold.
