Question:

Is it safe to use two surge protectors in one outlet?

I have two great quality surge protectors that I would like to put into the same wall outlet (It has two outlets on it - I want to put one surge protector in each). Is this a safe thing to do? Is it a bad idea to load this much in one socket, or is it just a matter of what the circuit for the entire room can handle?

  1. It is safe to use both surge protectors.

Your main concern would be the total load on the circuit.

You might want to plug one into the other if the item you are protecting is expensive. i did this by accident once, and when a car hit a tree, knocking down a power pole and sending 440 volts throughout my house, the first surge protector ignored it, passing the 440 volts, while the other blew up, saving my computer, printer and fax.

  2. The outlet itself is what normally limits the load for you.  If you have a fairly modern house, the circuit breakers are probably 20 amp.  But a standard outlet device itself is only rated for 15 amps.  You can plug both surge protectors into one outlet.  You can even plug one into the other for added protection as the other answer says.  This is actually a better solution.  Not only do you get better protection for the devices plugged into the second protector but the protecter itself probably has a 10 amp circuit breaker on it.  This will limit the load from your devices to the 10 amps of the first surge protector circuit breaker and prevents overloading the outlet.
