Is it safe to walk over large manholes?

Hi,

the lid should be larger than the hole, and the lid weighs more than you do so it won't just up and move.  

if trucks can drive over them, your little self can walk on them.

if you're scared, just kick at it before stepping on it.

In NY it seems there is some new story every day about people being electrocuted by them or steam blowing the covers off. And then there was the story about the chick who fell on one that was overheated and suffered third-degree burns all over her sides and arms.

Don't trust anything to be safe or well-maintained...Just walk around if you feel the need.

They ARE loose. However, the round shape isn't just esthetic. The covers can't possibly fall in.
