Is it safer to sit in the back seat or passenger seat for an adult male?

I have a driver, but I never can decide where I like to sit best. I figure I better sit wherever is safest. On one hand, the passenger seat has an airbag. The backseat is not directly in front of the windshield though, and has more car to protect the occupant. Which is safer?

  1. It used to be safer in the back seat.  But now with air bag, they are about the same.

    Good Luck...

  2. Front is safer for an adult male, the only reason the "back seat" would be safer is in the event of a severe front end collision in an older vehicle which totally destroys the front occupant space or if the airbag has a high possibility of killing said passenger instead of saving them.

Otherwise, in a modern vehicle with the ability to hit an offset at 40mph and come away uninjured, the front would be safer. In case you didn't notice, most crash tests are conducted with occupants in the front, not rear, who knows how safe it is for passengers occupying the rear seats. And since there are no airbags to deploy in the rear, instead of gradually slowing down, you're probably going to mash your face against the seat in front of you, something that I'd imagine in a severe collision could at the very minimum cause major pain in your neck and face. This is assuming of course you're a tall male, since a tall male or tall anybody wouldn't fare as well in a rear seat as they would in the front seat.

There are a multitude of factors you did not consider and therefore drawing any definite conclusions is difficult to say the least. One thing you forgot to mention is what kind of car are we talking about? Subcompact, compact, midsize, fullsize?

  3. Very simple, the front will be the safest for you....

  4. It will all depend if the car is hit from the front or rear ,and the seat you have picked to sit in , good look .

  5. I say the back seat is safer.

The reason is during a collision the driver tends to save themselves and turn away from a crash-- it's a well known thing. Because of this the passsenger seat is also known as the death seat.
