I want to send money through money gram online. They are asking for my social security number and I don't know whether it is safe to do so. Is anyone using the online transactions service and would you recommend using it?

Thanks.

  1. No, there is no reason to give your SSN number to them. In fact, I would avoid doing business with companies who ask for it since it seems quite shady to me that they are even asking given the amount of identity theft that is out there. Even health providers and insurance companies are no longer asking for the SSN number.

Other than showing your SSN card and other identification on your first day at a new employer there is no legal requirement to provide that information. Now, it is possible that you would want to provide a SSN to check your credit report (or to get a credit card or a mortgage in the first place) but you should always ask for their privacy policy and understand how your info will be protected first.

  2. Use Paypal.  There is no reason to have to give your SSN to be able to send money.  I'd definitely stay away!!

  3. Do not ever give such personal info. EVER.

  4. No.  It will be safer and cheaper to mail a postal money order.
