Is it silly to ride my bicycle to work?

I live in suburbs of Los Angeles where no body rides a bicycle for commute unless if they can't afford to have a car. So, Sadly, it is not viewed and accepted as one would hope. I own a car, but I would like to ride my bicycle to work. I am 25 year old woman. Is it dorky?... please please please share your views...

  1. who cares. if you like to ride, and you are physically capable of the ride, then do it. who cares if people think you're a dork. plus you will beat the gridlock and be doing your bit for the environment and getting fit all at the sam time.

and if you wear lots of spandex/lycra racing suits, people will only admire the veiw ;)

  2. I don't think it's dorky at all.  I think it would be pretty cool if you would be confident enough in yourself to not care what other people think.  Plus, it is way better for the environment and it's good exercise.  Who cares what those other people think?  I say do it.

  3. No, it's not dorky at all.  It shows that you are concerned about your health and want to get exercise.  You will also save money on gas, that you can then use for other things.  I have the greatest respect for anyone who rides a bicycle regularly, but even more so in a place like LA where it isn't common.

  4. As long as you can clean-up after your ride to work, GO FOR IT. Quit worrying about what others "think" (Who said they were capable of that anyway?) and do what you think will work for YOU! Being in WA. state, bicycling to work is seen as a GOOD thing. The weather isn't always the best for it, (Rainy/windy/cold) but you can dress for that. There's NOTHING quite like passing a looooooooong line of cars stuck in traffic as you peddal merrily along at an easy 20 mph, smiling at them as you pass them.

  5. its a great way to get to work,! (or anywhere) plus you are

getting exercise at the same time

the only problem depending how far you have to ride you might

want or need to find a shower before starting work

(I ride my own bike but I only live 15 minutes away from work)

and if you are tired (after work)  you could take a bus  a lot of buses now come

equipped with bike racks so you could take the bike and bus home

  6. If there's a safe place to ride, go for it!

And it's not dorky, it's actually pretty cool. Don't base your standards on what people in L.A. think... they are NOT typical!

  7. What is more silly, a bicyclist or a guy in a Hummer? You decide. I've been commuting for decades by bike and I couldn't care less what people think of me, with my flashing lights, helmet and rain coat. Just be careful when you ride your bike, but please do it! Consider yourself the tiny snowball which will get things rolling in your neighborhood, more will follow!

  8. I do not live in LA, but there are several people that ride a bike to my job.  They do it for exercise.

  9. ok, first the pro's:

    save on gas

    exercise

    less traffic

    now the con's

    ......................................

    duh...ride your bike babe.

  10. Biking is great exercise, first off - who cares what others think? If it's the way you need (and possiby want!) to get to your job, then you should take your bike! I think taking your bike would be fantastic!!

  11. I think it is wonderful to ride a bike to work or anywhere else as it is wonderful exercise and it is a great way to save money .It is not Dorky at all and the world would be much beter off if parents took the cars away from their teenagers and gave them a bike to ride everywhere they wanted to go . So I say go for it and live longer.

Good luck and good for you.

  12. it is healthy,

    good for the environment,

    doesn't use gas

doesn't create more pollution in the LA basin

it would be GREAT.  not dorky.

i think you should start a club.  a movement.

no, i am not kidding you.

  13. Hee hee that is rather dorky.  It would be better if you jogged to work because it would be you a h**l of a lot stronger and people would commend you working so hard each morning.

  14. I answered your later question on this already. Most people anywhere would be in your situation. I don't see commuters in MI either. When I had an opportunity to commute people thought I was odd. I didn't have a problem with it. In fact I enjoyed being green and healthier then the others. Trust me most people will really think highly of you that you took the effort to do something that they aren't willing to do. They may not say it but they think it.

  15. The only thing wrong with it is that it's extremely dangerous. L.A. drivers are not aware of the rules stating bikes have to stay in driving lanes, and they will zip past you with inches between and then honk at you for obeying the law.

You will one day be hit from behind. Count on it!

    P.S.

I grew up in L.A. and O.C. riding motorcycles, scooters, bicycles, cars, trucks, and anything else motor driven since the year 1960. My answer may not be what you wanted to hear, but I'm telling you like it is BABY.
