Americans spell it 'gray'. I personally can't stand the sight of that word, not sure why, so I've always stuck with the British spelling and printed it 'grey'.

Gray is the common spelling. Grey is the old english spelling. (or is it the other way around, I can never remember!)

Both are ok. In the US we tend to use gray more.

Grey is a *colour*.  (British)

In the US, gray is the modern spelling - grey is considered "archaic".

I usually spell it grey, but this is a question that is always on my mind as well.

  The "grey" spelling originated in Britian, and "gray" is just an American version of the original spelling.

  Pointwise, both spellings of the word have exactly the same meaning, therefore both are acceptable.
