I have a wired connection on my PC (speedtouch) which doesn't work on the wii. Whilst i was looking for internet connection i spotted an unprotected wireless signal. Is this illegal and does it count as stealing. I have looked at the website of the company who makes the router and the fee is monthly not download limited etc. I live in the UK

  1. if theres no security on the router then the owners clearly aren't technicly minded you will never get caught hehe, in my eyes if its open its fair game, in saying that if anyone asked me to setup their router security i would gladly help out

  2. It coun ts as stealing (you're using a service you're not paying for) and it may also count as a violation of something such as the Official Secrets Act, or similar.  (In the US it's a considered unauthorized use of a computer, which is a federal felony.)

  3. Yes, since you are not getting it from your network. You picking up the signol from someone around the nieghborhood, which is stealling. And they will know someone is jumping on their network, as you being on it will slow it down and all they have to do it login into the network settings to see whoes and after that all they have to do it call the police and then you'll be in deep trouble.

  4. yes

  5. It is stealing and illegal.

Let me give you a parallel.  If someone left his car unlocked with the key in the ignition, and you climb in and drive around are you stealing the car?

Admittedly it is foolish to leave the car unlocked with key in it just like it is foolish to have an unsecured wireless however this has no bearing on the ethics and legality of helping yourself.
